Facilities are minimal and you will encounter scanty other walkers. It enjoys a tender year round climate: warm and dry in summer, cool and medium in winter. It also boasts some of the east coast’s most distant and pristine beaches, with breathtaking coastal views from the ridge tops west across Huge Oyster Bay or south to Schouten Island. This tour is never far from the coast, yet quiet offers a sense of isolation and adventure in a relaxing and non challenging environment. Walk through lightly timbered forest with pleasing coastal views to our beginning pristine beach (Hazards Beach). Opportunity to visit Aryans’ Corner and Lagoon on an hasty night nature walk to appreciate the plentiful bird and wildlife. Another leisurely morning swim, followed by the walk to the end of the bay earlier the concise and steep climb to the saddle on The Hazards with more sensational views back over the bay and ahead to Cokes Bay. Grade: T2 (roadway Range and Mt Field West) Narrower but unmistakable tracks, which can be muddy in some places, in pristine spontaneous environments. This is partly because of its proximity to Hobart (94 km) but also because of its expansive variety of flora, dramatic glaciated land forms and ready accessibility to most areas of the park. This tour features examples of all the park’s attractions including sub alpine forests, stands of ancient pencil pines, the remarkable cushion plants, glacial moraines and block streams, alpine moorlands, exquisite trivial tarns and lakes, monolithic dole rite boulder fields, dramatic cliffs and peaks, and stunning views. We depart Tasmania Wilderness Expeditions’ own rural retreat, Bottom Camp Tasmania, for the 40km drive to the park entrance, temporary through the extensive hop fields of Bushy Park en route in the picturesque Derwent Valley. On the way we have the opportunity to pause at the Lofty Trees Track’ a 20min walk through the park’s majestic swamp gums (Eucalyptus regnant). We pay a quick visit to the curios in the hut at Twilight Tarn, then on to our evening’s campsite at the delightful Twisted Tarn. Behind making camp, we then have the opportunity to explore the tarns of the shelf without our packs earlier our night meal. Leaving our campsite at Twisted Tarn, we walk to Lake Newdegate Hut (a naughty weather alternative overnight stop) and then climb through dwarf mountain pines and pencil pines to the boggy Newdegate Pass and on to K Col. We have the opportunity to scramble across to the Watcher (1294m) and take in the dramatic views from its summit before reaching the high saddle of K Col and Peterson Hut where we break for lunch. A concise distance on we set up our campsite at the superb Clemens Tarn with spectacular views across to Florentine Apex (1376m) and the mountains further west of the park. We camp overnight at the lovely Lake Fanny, with its bright green cushion plants and rushing outflow channel of crystal definite water. Depending on the mood, we may base camp here and use this as an exploration base to visit the Walls, or we will descend through the Damascus Gate in the Walls area and make our bottom camp at the Pool of Bethesda. This is an undemanding gem of a walk in a insignificant visited area of the Central Highlands, with effortless access to the Walls, memorable scenery and a big diversity of alpine plant life.
